  • Hmmm.... It has been hard finding work as a quality assurance software engineer, my career for the last six years. However, I do have fairly good skills in UNIX, so I am considering spending $2000 to take a course to become a certified Sun Sys Admin Level I.  It is a 5 day course, up in Northern California. What do you think? A good investment?

  • If that qualification can lead too more doors opening up too you on the work front and that is what prospective employes would find a *bonus* or the *main stay* of your CV, my advice is go for it. Although its a shame you can't find a firm thats forward thinking, who will employ you and foot the bill for  extra training.

  • If you need a place to bunk up here, you are always welcome at Chez Lizard.  4 cats, no waiting.

  • if i may ask, what are your goals?  i guess I'm not sure why you love QA, so it's hard for me to gauge whether or not you'll like life as a sys admin.

  • Does a job come with that?

  • I guess I would ask are there job openings in your area for this skill?  Are there more jobs for this skill than for QA?  In other words what are the chances for a return on your investment?  I love you, and I am praying for you.

  • San Diego has a free computer magazine, ComputorEdge, that comes out every Friday and is available in bookstores like Borders and Barnes&Noble. Under the listing for organizations you'll find one devoted to Linux, KPLUG (Kernel Panic Linux Users' Group). Send them a message asking the same question you asked here. The people in the group are very helpful and you should get an answer you find helpful.

Or send me an email at WordJames@computer.org and I'll forward it to the group. I'm on the wrong computer right now.
