Is Fall Official Yet?
Yeah, we are having fallish weather today and I am loving it. Seasons are not so obvious in Southern California, so we take what we can get. I love getting to wear sweaters again, and fall foods, the smell of cinnamon, the taste of pumpkin and the crunching of leaves under foot!
I am finally feeling like we are pretty well settled in since the move, there are still things to move at the old house, but nothing critical and worst case I will hire someone to help box it up once that house sells. Things are settled enough that I don’t feel totally guilty when I work on crafty endeavors, rather than unpacking and sorting. My most recent project is trying my hand at making a cloth doll, using the same pattern my mother did to make me a doll back when I was 6 or 7 years old. That doll, Annie, was one of my two favorite toys growing up (the other being a beloved teddybear who is no longer). My daughters are more into stuffed animals than dolls, so show no interest in this, but maybe one day there will be grand daughters who feel differently! Kids in general don’t seem to be so much into things like cloth dolls anymore, it is hard to compete in a world of Barbie and Bratz!
This is what Annie looks like today, not so bad for a young lady of almost 40 years old!
I am ready to put hair on my doll, but must admit, they look a bit alien at this point! Here is how my doll is looking:
I am hoping to do the hair sometime this weekend. Tomorrow is my monthly miniature club meeting, so I will be off to work on the chocolate shop I am making. I haven’t posted any pictures of that, I suppose I should at some point!
Sunday, Joe and I are going to a performance by a group called Celtic Springs, they do Celtic music and dancing. It sounds like it will be fun.
The girls are busy with school again. Megan loves her teacher and is planning a trip to the science museum for her birthday on the 27th. She is going to be turning 10! Wow! I need to finish getting her gifts together. She wants a drawing pad for her computer so she can do more computer animation, something she is very into.
Becca is in advanced art this year and they are doing masks right now. And of course, she is in her social butterfly element being back with all her friends. She is planning to do Science Olympiad this year again. Her science teacher managed to get $30,000 in grants to help fund the program, which used to be totally paid for through fund raisers and parent time and donations.
We are still hoping the old house sells quickly, but so far only the one off and then they refused our counter. We had to take the lock box off the door, because agents kept leaving the doors unlocked! Then, on our last trip, we found a door not only unlocked but standing wide open! Showing the house by appointment only sucks, and will not help the sale, but we can’t afford the risk of having the house vandalized or robbed.
Hope everyone is well and please keep all the folks in the path of hurricane Ike in your thoughts and prayers. We have several close friends in the area.

you should give her eyelashes or eyebrows like Annie!
For several days it has felt like fall here. A few of the leaves on the sugar maple in the front yard are turning color! Fall is my favorite season. I have put the wreath I made at Michaels up on the porch by the front door. Oh, and that little squirrel tea set I bought at Cracker Barrel when you and I drove out is now out on the table.
It is so sweet to see Annie again. I think you got her for Christmas in 1971. I remember that red striped dress very well. It took a long time to do the embroidery on it. Sewing her clothes was just like making regular clothes as far as details.
I am very impressed that the science teacher was able to get a grant. That is a lot of money.
Hugs, Mom
The doll is very cool… I can tell she will look much like the original. And you’re right… she does look a little alien. Maybe you can make some Alien dolls? Kinda like that, only with a bigger head & those big eyes, lol. I jest… but someone would probably buy them if you made them. People dig stuff like that.
I would be seriously annoyed if I kept finding doors to my property left open or unlocked! What the hell? How hard is it to lock up??? Don’t blame you at all for taking the lock box away…
Hi there,
I stumbled across your fantastic blog & I thought I’d stop & say hello.
You also looked like the kind of girl who might want to know about a contest I’m having on my Xanga Blog!
I’m
not a nut. I don’t want to steal your checking account information. I’m
just a girl in love with Etsy! What’s Etsy you say? Well, it’s a
website where you can buy & sell all things handmade. Like Ebay but
with way cooler stuff!
Anyhoo, I’m having a contest to
spread the word about Etsy (just because I want to, not because I’m
Etsy’s pimp or anything!) & you should come check it out! It’s easy
to enter & fun & I’m giving away jewelry that I’ve made that is
totally rockin! Seriously, come see!
